fasdNL's statement on the passing of Dr. Ted Rosales

5/23/2024

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Ted Rosales, MD, FRCPC, O.N.L, on May 20, 2024, in St. John’s, NL.
Dr. Rosales championed Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder work in Newfoundland and Labrador when it was still virtually unheard of. He contributed heavily to early FASD work across the province, bringing attention to diagnosis, lack of awareness and the need for increased response to FASD as a complex public health issue.
Dr. Rosales' influence was not limited to his area of expertise in assessment and diagnosis. His impact was far-reaching, spanning FASD prevention advocacy, education about alcohol and pregnancy, and a deep understanding of the multifaceted ways FASD affects individuals and families. His contributions extended beyond Newfoundland and Labrador, playing a pivotal role in the establishment of a National Screening Tool Kit and the development of the Canadian FASD Diagnostic Guidelines.
Dr. Rosales was a dedicated professional, a deeply passionate advocate for FASD, and a mentor to many. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he would eagerly educate anyone interested in FASD and its complexities. His tireless efforts laid the foundation for the work of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder NL Inc (fasdNL) since our formation in 2013.
Dr. Rosales, affectionately known as ‘Dr. Ted’ by his young patients, was an example of kindness and reassurance. His gentle sense of humor and unwavering support provided immeasurable comfort to families, while his candid preparation of them for the necessary advocacy skills around FASD was a testament to his dedication and care.
We send our most profound condolences to Dr. Rosales’ family and friends and gratefully acknowledge his countless and instrumental contributions to FASD work in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond.
