Did you hear? Our social media FASD prevention and awareness campaign is now launched! It's the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada. fasdNL has developed a FASD prevention and awareness campaign in an effort to increase support and increase dialogue surrounding individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Our Atlantic-wide campaign addresses FASD prevention and awareness with an approach that is strength-based and supported by evidence. We at fasdNL recognize the stigma that is attached to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. A goal of this campaign is to address the stigma associated with FASD by promoting public awareness and by delivering accurate and consistent information along with re-framing the issue to include partners, friends, and family members. In doing so, we aim to highlight the ways we can all support healthy pregnancies rather than placing the burden on women alone. fasdNL is leading a three-year FASD prevention, awareness, and training collaborative action project in Atlantic Canada. See the campaign and learn more about the project at www.fasdNL.ca/prevention  As part of a three-year FASD prevention, awareness and education project in Atlantic Canada entitled Toward Prevention, fasdNL is pleased to invite you to our FASD 101 and the Justice System training that will take place on: 26 – 27* October 2021, held virtually over Zoom 9:00am – 12:00pm (AST) | 9:30am – 12:30pm (NST) *Facilitator training only FASD 101 and the Justice System is a free half-day training designed for justice professionals and community organizations who may work adjacent to or directly with justice-involved individuals impacted by fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). This training aims to increase understanding of FASD and its intersections with the justice system as well as deliver promising interventions for justice-involved individuals with FASD. This interactive evidence-based training will address current FASD diagnostic information, stigma and shame associated with the disorder, as well as various interventions and strategies for a strength-based and person-centered approach. Interested in becoming a facilitator of this training? fasdNL is happy to announce that we will be offering a facilitator training session for individuals who wish to deliver our FASD 101 and the Justice System training to colleagues. Attend FASD 101 and the Justice System on October 26th, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm (Atlantic): Email [email protected] to attend the interactive three-hour training. Become a trained facilitator of FASD 101 and the Justice System on October 27th, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm (Atlantic): Email [email protected] to attend the facilitator's three-hour training. *Please note: To become a facilitator, you must first attend the training on October 26th. Space is limited. Registrants will receive an email on October 25th with information about how to access the training via Zoom. Have questions? Email [email protected] To help spread awareness and accurate messaging about FASD, fasdNL invited municipalities all across Atlantic Canada to proclaim September 6-10 as FASD Awareness Week. Many municipalities accepted the invitation to issue proclamations. We thank all municipalities who took part and the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island for their awareness efforts. In total, we had 51 locations (including the province of NL) proclaim September 6 - 10, 2021 as FASD Awareness Week! Together, we are putting FASD on the Map in Atlantic Canada! Join us for Move for FASD from September 6-10 to raise awareness about FASD and support fasdNL's initiatives across Newfoundland and Labrador. September 9th marks international FASD day intended to build awareness about the condition and surrounding stigma within communities, organizations and governments. Government of Canada invests in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Prevention in Atlantic Provinces6/17/2021 "Today’s investment will support fasdNL Network’s work to increase knowledge of FASD, help reduce drinking during pregnancy, and promote positive health and social outcomes for people with FASD.” - The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health "Today, Member of Parliament, Scott Simms, on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health, announced funding for Toward Prevention, which will increase awareness of FASD, prevent alcohol use in pregnancy, and improve the health and social outcomes for those affected by FASD.
The prevention-based awareness campaign will include social media ads, infographics, and resource materials for the public and for health and social service professionals that reflect Atlantic Canada’s unique needs, values, and contexts. The campaign and resources will be translated into French, Mi’kmaq, Passamaquoddy-Maliseet, Innu-Aimun, and Inuktitut. The ‘FASD 101 and the Justice System’ training curriculum is tailored to justice professionals such as policing, corrections and parole officers, lawyers and judges.This comprehensive, evidence-based FASD training offers a trauma-informed lens to understanding FASD and its intersection with the justice system in Atlantic Canada. This project will support the development of a facilitator manual and virtual training sessions to increase capacity of justice professionals to train others across the Atlantic provinces."
