"A mother in St. John’s has spent years trying to secure care for her adopted daughter, who has fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), while pursuing answers about other possible underlying conditions."
"Specialists reviewing her case noted that some of her behaviours were not typical for children with FASD... for example, you could have FASD and have bipolar and/or schizophrenia too." “She just isn’t able to fully comprehend the consequences of her actions.” "While not everyone with FASD will have another diagnosis, co-occurring conditions, both physical and mental health-related, occur at a higher rate than in the general population." “Their challenges are not connected to lack of effort, but to the fact that their brain works differently. If we recognize their brain works differently, then we can support them differently.” "These barriers are rooted in a lack of understanding and resources for children with FASD and complex mental health needs." We’re thrilled to announce the official launch of the fasdNL Diagnostic Network! This groundbreaking initiative is designed to address longstanding gaps in FASD assessment and diagnosis across Newfoundland and Labrador, ensuring more individuals and families have access to timely and equitable services. “The establishment of the fasdNL Diagnostic Network marks a significant step forward in addressing barriers to FASD diagnosis in Newfoundland and Labrador. By connecting and supporting 80 trained healthcare professionals across the province, we are expanding access to vital diagnostic services for individuals and families who have long faced challenges in obtaining assessments.” – Dr. Katharine Dunbar Winsor, Executive Director of fasdNL. 📍Referrals accepted from professionals/service providers or individuals 🌉Bridges those seeking an assessment with in-network professionals who are trained to assess FASD 📑We compile the unofficial FASD diagnostic team based on your location/needs 📕FASD inquiries/assessments only at this time Learn more about the network here! http://www.fasdnl.ca/diagnosticnetwork.html “This network is about increasing access—not replacing existing services—but ensuring that more individuals receive the care they need. The support of the Department of Health and Community Services has been instrumental in making this possible.” - Dr. Katharine Dunbar Winsor, Executive Director, fasdNL. The fasdNL Diagnostic Network builds on the efforts of the Labrador-Grenfell FASD Diagnostic Team, the Janeway Child Development team, and private practice professionals in the province. It was spearheaded by fasdNL including board chair and psychologist Heather Conran-Paul, whose expertise in FASD assessment dates back to her training with the late Dr. Ted Rosales in the 1990s. The initiative is further supported by an expanded Project and Diagnostic Network Coordinator position made possible thanks to funding from the Department of Health and Community Services. Bill S-253 declares that the Minister of Health must develop a national framework on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
